Yo La Tengo – Stuff Like That There

Yo La Tengo - Stuff Like That ThereNow operational for longer than some of their baldest fans have been alive, Yo La Tengo continue to thump the jukebox of 20th century guitar music on Stuff Like That There, a collection of covers as well as revisions from their own back catalogue. That the band have managed to remain both hip and lovable over the years is perhaps no surprise. The New Jersey trio often feel like two different bands from one track to the next: huge, winding, drone-rock workouts sit happily next to the type of countrified acoustic whispering that peppered all those mixtapes your first boyfriend at university kept producing in earnest.

One style dominates on this occasion, however, and it's the slide guitar that edges out the whammy pedal. Fans of Georgia Hubley's cosying warble will find a great deal to enjoy here, as many of the band's best tracks are not so much stripped back as laid bare: "All Your Secrets" loses its organ-driven melody to become a fairly plodding acoustic number, while I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One classic "Deeper Into Movies" is barely recognisable, gutted of the distorted guitar lines that swelled the album cut. The typically eclectic selection of covers get the same treatment, with only The Cure's "Friday I'm In Love" proving an oddly jaunty affair.

Nothing here could be considered essential, though your enjoyment of the collection on offer will depend a great deal on which Yo La Tengo you were looking for. Painful it ain't, and for many the singular pace will render the album, consumed in its entirety, a saccharine affair. But for those who could lie back and listen to Ira and Georgia crooning the phone book (and frankly, they could probably pull it off), this will provide many more gentle hours of pleasure.

Release: 28th August 2015, Matador
