Introducing: White Bee

White BeeThe streets of Detroit have gone through a cultural renaissance over the past 5 years. The sights, sounds, and flavors of the city are bursting with a lush vibrancy. One of the bands contributing to this revival is a neo-soul group called White Bee. Comprising Shannon Barnes (guitar and vocals), Alex Niemi (drums), Michael O'Brien (bass and backing vocals), and Scott Ryan (keys), the group injects a fresh splash of color onto a dripping canvas. Their sound fuses elements of soul, jazz, and even funk. Citing influences like Hiatus Kaiyote, it's easy to see where this mixture comes from.

Barnes' vocals take center stage in the groovy cocktail, and are especially prevalent on the recently released single, "Beat State". The song has a head-turning bass line, shimmering guitar chords, and an infectiously fun tempo change around every corner. The melodies are interesting, exciting, and shine through elements of well-placed layering, which are an attribute to the group's DIY recording and production process.

White Bee has an upbeat sound that keeps feet shuffling and heads bobbing. With all of the music coming out of the local music scene in Detroit, it's nice to know that the future is in good hands. Those hands move up and down fretboards with speed, precision, and jazzy creativity. Listening to White Bee is like a musical lesson that deviates from the traditional, and makes several stops along the way to a host of genres. Keep an eye out for future tracks, and in the meantime, you can check out White Bee on Bandcamp.
