The Flaming Lips2017 has been the year of The Flaming Lips. With all the other worldly chaos going on, they have unleashed new album Oczy Mlody and staged enormous festival sets. Now, as the UK stint of their tour comes to end, they make a stop off at Colston Hall.

Framed with four massive mushrooms, dubious cannons and a curtain of LED light strips, the room gives an inkling into the evening's madness. As the band takes to the stage, frontman Wayne Coyne, describes the entrance cheers as "Spielberg-worthy". An extended "Race for the Prize" kicks off the evening. Wayne plays the audience's cheers like an orchestra, rising his hand as if it were a conductor's baton during the song lulls. As the song kicks in, everything erupts. Lights strobe, confetti showers down and a sea of beach balls fill the room. The audience descends into chaos whilst the band immerse themselves into the anarchy. As the song comes to an end, the band and the stage quickly re-organise and a pink robot is quickly inflated for "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1".

With the constant stage changes, it is difficult to see how the band keep up with themselves. But The Flaming Lips are clearly thriving in the madness. Their performance packs the same punch of the visuals as they tear through "There Should Be Unicorns" and "Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung".

The grandeur of the show and the hall feels overwhelming at points. However speeches in between songs give the show a bizarre intimate feel. The band reflect on everything from the death of Trump, linking eternal happiness and screaming, and singing happy 50th birthday to an attendee's wife (who was, surprisingly, absent).

As the set progresses, a screen is revealed underneath the LED curtain. The two are synced perfectly as giant YEAHs illuminate the stage for the aptly named "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your Power)". Defying the norm of flat-sounding Bowie covers, tonight's rendition of "Space Oddity" is given an out of this world feel as Wayne enters into a giant inflatable ball and clambers across the audience. Strobe heavy "The W.A.N.D" is delivered toward the end of the show, complete with a dancing set of eyes. Big hit "Do You Realize??" closes the set, with Wayne singing underneath an inflatable rainbow and a massive confetti explosion.

From the off, it's clear that the band are not solely in it for themselves, with Wayne proclaiming that entertaining his fans is the best job in the world. I was lucky enough to catch some of the band outside the venue before the show, just 15 minutes before they were due on. He posed for photos and chatted away, seemingly oblivious to the awe that everyone was under. This humble attitude and love for the fans really puts The Flaming Lips' outrageous show into perspective, and it cements them as one of the greatest live acts of all time.
