Introducing: Charly Bliss

Charly BlissIf pop-punk's your thing, you might have a bit of time for the likes of Green Day, Blink-182 and, more recently, Paramore. These bands have played an important part in bringing the genre into mainstream popularity and keeping it there. Residing in New York City is Charly Bliss, a band that hopes to make similar waves with their debut album GUPPY.

There's a sweet story to this band's formation and early years. Consisting of siblings Eva Hendricks (vocals, guitar) and Sam Hendricks (drums), as well as Dan Shure (bass) and Spencer Fox (vocals, guitar), the story goes that Eva and Dan used to date as teens and Dan and Spencer used to go to summer camp together. So through teenage love and friendship grew Charly Bliss, a band that writes catchy, energetic, hook-driven, punk-infused pop. And they’ve been doing so for half a decade. So, what have they been doing in those five years prior to the release of their 2017 debut album? Well, trying to figure out what side of the cross-genre fence they sit on, with Eva finally declaring: "We basically had to come to terms with the fact that we are, at heart, a pop band".

Eva has a quirky and slightly squeaky voice, which is likely to be a unique factor in winning the teenage emo heart. The band is a tight-knit unit. A solid rhythm section is drenched in distorted guitars that burst into simple licks, with throw-around tempos that have their songs clocking in between two and three minutes long; songs that wouldn’t look out of place on the American Pie soundtrack.

As is often the case with pop-punk, it's created by young minds for a young audience. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. The true test for Charly Bliss will be in their follow up. Taking this simple, fun formula and adding some other musical elements, perhaps not yet explored in their genre, giving their fans something new and exciting. Good luck to them.
