Bristol Ladyfest countdown: Zahra Barri

With less than a week to go until Bristol Ladyfest kicks off… read on to find out a little more about the five fantastic comedians performing at the What The Frock! comedy gig that wraps up the festival on Sunday night.

Compered by Rosie Wilby, your funny bones will be tickled by double act O’Shea & Ogilvie, as well as Bristol’s own Elf Lyons, and the inimitable Zahra Barri – who had the honour of opening the very first WTF! at the sold-out Arnolfini in May.

Zahra is no stranger to the world of What The Frock! – having opened the very first night we put on, in front of a sold-out crowd at the Arnolfini.

As well as WTF!, Zahra has had the good fortune to support Gail Porter, as well as Howard Marks (international drug baron; her mother was so proud). She enjoyed speaking with Howard backstage. She explained to him that in the Middle East, where she comes from, 'getting stoned’ is an entirely different prospect.

“I suppose on stage I'm a heightened version of myself, I don't know where I get it,” Zahra muses. “I just do what I find funny.” And what she's finding particularly funny at the moment is her Egyptian, Muslim aunt, who she recently moved in with. “She just speaks!” explains Zahra, “and then I just say the words on stage. She's very, err... interesting.”
