Top 10 Songs to Listen to Before a Job Interview

Job interviewJobs. We’ve all heard of them. Some of you may even have one. Those who have will perhaps be able to recall the harrowing process of, The Interview. The interview was first introduced in the 16th century as a form of torture by the Chinese, but due to a clerical error it became standard practice for companies looking to hire prospective employees across the globe. Despite how terrible this process has become, it looks like it's unfortunately here to stay. If you have one coming up, you’re just going to have to put on a brave face and listen to these 10 songs to ensure you’re fully prepared. Although a little research about the company and a nice button-down wouldn’t go amiss either.

If you possess the skills required, feel free to recreate this playlist in a program of your choice. It will basically mean you have experience in media and will look great on your CV, increasing your chance of interview tenfold.

1// Rob Dougan – Clubbed to Death

You’re Ruth ‘The Badger’ Badger from series two of The Apprentice; you’ve got confidence and, when needed, you can use your head and your mind and your brain too. "Clubbed to Death" should be playing in your ears right up until Sharon at reception tells you to go through to the interview room. Guess what? You’re not taking squat from no one, and the job’s basically yours. You’re the CEO before you've even taken a step in the office.

2// Dexys Midnight Runners – Come on Eileen

This one’s great if you’re called Eileen, but don’t despair if you’re not. Replace Eileen with your name in your head, or pretend you are called Eileen, and find comfort in the fact that Dexys Midnight Runners, and all your friends and family, are behind you every step of the way. Come on Eileen, you can do it.

3// Britney Spears – Work Bitch

This is what your parents want to say to you, but they won’t because they feel bad when they swear at you. So let Britney take the reins and remind you that, if you want a hot body and a Bugatti, you’re going to need to work, bitch, unless you’re a criminal, although you can’t steal a hot body, and anyway, you don’t need to sink to that level because you’ve got a job interview and you’re going to be the number one candidate.

4// The Rakes – 22 Grand Job

The Rakes called it back in 2005, 22 grand job in the city, it’s alright. Well, it’s not, but beggars can’t be choosers, and that’s what you’ll have to be in the current jobs market. Change the lyrics to 18 grand job and The Rakes are still pretty much spot on, experience trumps a basic living wage anyway, remember that.

5// William Shatner – Common People

Rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job.” You’ve been having fun, but now it’s time to settle down and work. William Shatner’s rendition of "Common People" will remind you that you will be living like common people, and doing all the things that common people do, but that’s ok. Climbing the corporate ladder starts at the interview, stand firmly on the first rung, and remember, you didn’t simply stand on any old ladder, it’s yours, or your dad’s. Step up and never look down.

6// S Club 7 – Reach

Rachel Stevens wants you to reach for the stars. Rachel Stevens knows you can do it and won’t stop reminding you of that fact until your dreams have all come true. Rachel Stevens had an interview once, and look where that got her, the greatest club of all time. Are you ready to join a club of your own and become the Rachel Stevens you always knew you could be?

7// Slipknot – Before I Forget

I will remember before I forget,” sings Slipknot front man, Corey Taylor, and neither will you. You won’t forget why you’re at this interview, because you’re the best. You won’t forget the right things to say, because you prepared and made cue cards and everything. Why not turn the interview around and interview the interviewers? After all, they will be working for you in a few years’ time.

8// M.O.P. – Ante Up

This is a great one to have playing in your head as you enter the interview room, although don’t commit too hard otherwise you’ll blast the doors off their hinges. Like Billy Danze and Lil’ Fame, you’re fierce, fight the urge to the flip over the chairs and desk and channel the energy from Ante Up to demonstrate why you’re the one for the job.

9// Black Flag – Rise Above

We are born with a chance, and I am gonna take my chance,” Henry Rollins took his, will you take yours? Yes you will, you’re going to rise above the competition and remind people why they don’t show up to interviews that you too have been invited to.

10// A Tribe Called Quest – Can I Kick It?

Yes you can. You kicked it when it wasn’t even there, like Lucy swiping the ball away from Charlie Brown in a Peanuts comic strip, but instead of falling over, your boot lands square in the faces of those who think they can get this job over you. You’re hired and you know it.
