Introducing: Suzi Wu

Suzi WuSuzi Wu has a real swagger to her. The 19-year-old is whipping up a storm from her North London stomping ground with her twangy, guitar-heavy brand of alternative pop. Armed with a drawling voice and lyrical style heaving with disillusionment and cynicism, she's already catching the ears of top tastemakers across the web, has just played a set as part of The Line of Best Fit's Five Day Forecast 2018, and will be playing Live at Leeds in May later this year.

You'll get a charming first impression from her debut EP, Teenage Witch, released in September. A well-disguised cover of Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon" is sneaked onto the record with three self-penned songs, all bearing her cool DIY production. The EP's eponymous opening track starts with the delightful couplet: "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, the guys are fuckboys, the girls are sluts... is that good enough?" It then slinks into the verse with its infectious guitar riff and shuffling drum beat underneath half sung, half spoken vocals. It's a mesmerising cocktail of sound, leading to an even better chorus: "But I'm too scared to live, too stoned to die, green is the skin of the teenage witch in a drive through life."

Even better perhaps is the darker, richer "Taken Care Of", currently featured on Spotify's Badass Women playlist. There are hints of The xx in its stripped back arrangement, and it boasts another brilliant chorus rich with cynicism: "Mama papa love me, I think so anyway, mama papa love me, at least that's what they say."
