Introducing: Stef Chura

Stef ChuraThe splashy, alternative rock of Stef Chura is starting to garner some solid attention from both sides of the Atlantic. Hailing from Alpena in Michigan, but now based in Detroit, she's a fan of Patti Smith, Elliot Smith, and Cat Power. There's a lo-fi edge to Chura's rock sound; sometimes melancholic, as on "Human Being" where she warbles wistfully over the top of chiming reverb guitar tones, and sometimes angry, as on the faster paced "Spotted Gold". The latter has over 500,000 Spotify plays, while the former is currently on their Undercurrents playlist and seems sure to follow suit.

DW is particularly a fan of her gentler, darker side - the description by Pitchfork Music as "delicate and echoey fingerpicking tangles" is nicely formulated - and it feels like she's drifting off into her own world while capturing her songs, a refreshingly sincere quality in the sometimes overproduced, meticulously crafted musical landscape we find ourselves in.

Stef Chura's latest single, "Speeding Ticket", was released through Saddle Creek and can best be described as like the music of instrumental luminaries Explosions in the Sky with the edgy vocals of Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries over the top. And, as an added bonus, it boasts a video that feels like you've wandered onto the set of Donnie Darko.

Her debut album Messes due out through Saddle Creek on 2nd February 2018.
