Introducing: Outsider

OutsiderTo be the first artist featuring your native tongue – in this case, Irish Gaelic – in a mainstream video game (here, FIFA 2018) is quite a feather to have in one’s cap. Outsider is an Irish producer and multi-instrumentalist, charging onto the scene with his brand of high-velocity 80s synth-infused rock. Along with football game lovers, his music will also be familiar to fans of the series Shadowhunters on Netflix.

With strong notes of Bruce Springsteen and Bright Eyes in his sound, there is also a striking similarity to The War on Drugs and Krautrock pioneers NEU! in the ferocious energy and repetition of the instrumentation, along with subtler hints of early Bloc Party.

Recently signed to Warner’s label, W, his latest single "Míol Mór Mara" (literally "sea whales") is inspired by his work with a child with Down’s Syndrome whose influence helped pull the songwriter out of a period of depression. Taken from his debut Outsider EP, which sees him switch between English and Gaelic lyrics, 100% of profits from the single are being donated to Down’s Syndrome Ireland. The song’s name is a reference to the story of Jonah and the Whale, and the feeling of being swallowed up by the pressures of life, but also with the uplifting idea that he’s out in the ocean with his happier whale companion…
