Introducing: Halo Maud

Halo MaudI often feel French artists who build a really strong fan base and enjoy much success within the borders of their own country are rarely rewarded with the same global success their music deserves. One of my favourite artists growing up was French rock band Luke, who had several hits on French radio but were little known elsewhere. Similarly, while We Were Evergreen (now just Evergreen) have toured with the likes of Goldfrapp and Metronomy, their brilliant debut album Towards hasn't received the recognition it should have (despite being in English and avoiding the arguable language barrier of French lyrics). Here's to hoping that solo female artist Halo Maud and her brand of sophisticated pop avoid a similar problem.

Based in Paris but signed to Michel Records in Canada as well as Heavenly Recordings elsewhere, her bright, chiming and slightly mystical sound rings of the aforementioned Evergreen. There's an edge of Blonde Redhead in some of her music as well. Gauging from her music, she appears to want everything at once, refusing to choose between English and French; the clinical and the dreamy.

Having developed her three track debut EP Du Pouvoir (literally meaning 'power') from experimental work she did with Maxime Le Guil (Radiohead, Camille) and Robin Leduc, she has taken several French newspapers by storm, including Libération and Le Monde. This has culminated in a set at Brittany's notorious La Route du Rock festival, a feature on MTV and tour across France in 2018.
