Introducing: Giungla

GiunglaIt is somewhat poignant that we're writing up today’s Introducing artist while staring across the Bay of Silence on the western coast of Italy, just a couple of hours away from her home city of Bologna, where every corner turned seems to lead to yet another display of breathtaking Renaissance architecture. Giungla – which as you might have guessed means “jungle” in her native Italian tongue – is the moniker of solo artist Emanuela Drei.

The former singer and guitarist of alternative indie trio HEIKE HAS THE GIGGLES and touring bassist with her friend His Clancyness, Frei is a very accomplished musician, having played the piano since the age of 5. She created her debut EP Camo with only guitar, sampler, synth and drum machine, and her songs are sincere and unflorid in their production. There's a touch of PJ Harvey about her, and there are hints of The XX and Glass Animals in her music, especially the guitar textures. She paints a certain dreamy, melancholic air, particularly on "Sand", one of her standout tracks.

Another track, "Wrong", was featured as NME’s new song of the day upon its release, as she started to build her profile out of central Italy. Speaking to the guys at NME, she admitted her shyness on stage: "I don’t really feel a hundred percent comfortable knowing that all eyes are on me." Despite this, she's maintained her live set as a solo artist, last year playing support slots in Rome for The XX and in Milan for Foals.
