Maturity should only influence a review when the quality of the music is so outstanding it negates the age of the artists making it. That’s exactly the case when it comes to Austin based band Charlie Belle, a trio comprising three teenagers who can already boast USA Today coverage and some love from Amy Poehler.
Charlie Belle comprises front woman Jendayi Bonds, drummer Gyasi Bonds and bassist Zoe Czarnecki; who, despite their tender age, have together been making music for a staggering seven years. The content of Charlie Belle’s playful indie pop also hints at wisdom beyond their years. Suckling from the same honey pot as Rilo Kiley, though perhaps less maudlin, they cite The Magnetic Fields and somewhat confusingly The Strokes as an influence.
The success of the band is partly due to child prodigy Jendayi, who picked up a guitar at the age of seven and according formed her first band at the age of ten. Sickeningly premature talent aside, now at 16 years of age, Jendayi has truly found her feet, carving out a distinct and trademark vocal to suit her popsicle-struck indie chords.
Charlie Belle will release their debut EP Get to Know on 13th January 2015. Listen to the lead, eponymous track below and find out more about Charlie Belle here.
