Introducing: BOA

BOA"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." I don't know if BOA ever went through a Camus phase at college, but they seem to have channelled some of the goalkeeper's poignant spirit into their music. Freshly signed to indie label Hand In Hive - the folks who also brought us DrunkenWerewolf favourites Saltwater Sun - the band have just unleashed their debut single, "Holier". And boy, is it a dazzler.

Combining the blissed out melodies and production of chillwave (we're thinking Goldroom and Washed Out here), BOA's sound manages to avoid laptop sterility by dint of a sharp and evocative lyrical palette: the yearned-for lover memorably "stings my tongue like wasabi." It's one of the reasons why, though the temptation remains, it feels a little lazy to describe BOA's songs as simply 'summery' when there are such deep swathes of melancholy bringing shade to their work.

We were lucky enough to catch the trio at Bristol's Louisiana back in October, when they were still counting their gigs to date on one hand. Not that you'd know it - every song in their small oeuvre had the crowd hypnotised, with each member of the band impressively taking turns on lead vocals. In the short time since then, they've already opened for Sylvan Esso, and more gigs are forthcoming. If they can keep this up, 2016 could be BOA's time in the sun.

Find out more about BOA here and listen to "Holier" below.
