Introducing: Art School Girlfriend

Art School GirlfriendWhen your debut EP is released by a record label owned by a super producer who co-wrote a Bond theme tune (in this case Wolf Tone, the imprint of the Skyfall theme’s creator Paul Epworth), you know you’re surely set for big things. And the dark and stormy electro-pop production in the layers that underpin Art School Girlfriend’s vocal lines is as meticulously crafted as you would expect.

Her Measures EP has drawn a raft of comparisons to Massive Attack, bearing as it does shades of their rich and unhurried style. The first single "Bending Back", a DrunkenWerewolf favourite from the EP, bears a similar beat, pace and chord progression as the trip-hop gods’ "Tear Drop". You can also hear Metronomy in the sparse orchestration and minimalist percussion textures, while her voice bears subtle comparisons to London Grammar’s Hannah Reid, in its roundedness, particularly in her lower registers.

Originally from Wrexham, North Wales, Art School Girlfriend writes and produces all the music herself, and has developed a sound that somehow manages to feel both complex and elegant. It's the music you would want to listen to walking across the bleak and desolate landscapes of the surface of the moon, staring out into the void of space.

They were absolutely incredible at the Tom Thumb in Margate, the real deal live. Proper great singing and old fashioned stage presence.
