Introducing: Lady Lazarus
She looks a bit like Blake Lively in her photograph to the left, but Lady Lazarus aka Melissa Ann Sweat has got a lot more up her sleeve than good looks and a shoddy résumé. Notably, she’s a dab hand at self-releasing, having put out her own debut Mantic to phenomenal success in the States. From the sound of current freebie “Lapsarian”, available to stream below, her new album All My Love in Half Light is going to be just as much of a hit.
Due for release on 29th January 2013 and available to pre-order here, the record plays like a whacked out Janis Joplin of sorts, coupled with some Mary Epworth style instrumentation and a sweet Americana drawl. Melissa often exposes her spiritual side through her songs, and takes influence from Sylvia Plath and Vashti Bunya, but if you prefer Reading to Glastonbury don’t be alarmed: this is one seriously talented woman, coupled via Graveface Records with esteemed artists such as Mount Eerie, Xiu Xiu and Mike Watt all in the name of charidee. She also counts Aimee Mann as one of her favourite artists and that can only be a good thing.
