Introducing: Perhaps Contraption
When I was first emailed about this band I misread their name as ‘Perhaps Contraception’ and thought they might be some weird dedication to the scum of the Earth. And while Perhaps Contraption are definitely weird they’re the other end of the spectrum in terms of class – a talented bunch of folk making a very strange, yet compelling and artistically accomplished noise.
Recent song “Cousin/Grandma” lets everyone know that all eight members have no cousin or Grandma before promptly declaring they also have no identity, which is a bit hard to swallow coming from a band who clearly own a large backstage wardrobe. Their video then documents them swanning around with slugs on their face in bizarre Edwardian dress and other times no clothes at all. You couldn’t make it up.
Musically with an array of brass instruments on their side and a choral effort to blow your local theatre group away, they peddle the same bizarre spectacle as Xerox Teens, Gaggle et al. Their debut album Listening Bones is out now and is well worth your pennies.
