There are artists that you immediately fall head over heels in love with. They’re the kind to burn a short but blinding flame; though you may later reconcile with your love affair to find a more permanent place in your heart, your initial total devotion has a tendency to fade.
Then there are those who filter into your vision with the gathering pace of a snail. They silently creep up on you until they fill every inch of your vision. Their presence can be blighted by another, but they remain squarely in front of you for a long, long time.
Stylusboy (a.k.a. Coventry’s Steve Jones) falls very firmly into the second category. Calling to mind the wanton twee of My First Tooth and Our Lost Infantry, but paired with the roadworthy resilience of Ryan Adams, his third EP Whole Picture is a coming together of infectious harmony and simple, charming melody.
Jones operates a strictly DIY business following several years touring the Midlands circuit as a session musician. Honouring the selflessness of such a position, he offers much of his work on a ‘pay what you like’ basis. You can currently download his debut Fingerprint, sophomore Blue Whale Session, and Whole Picture (streamed below) from his website.
